After Sophie’s gallery show and Ian’s arrival, Sid and Hannah host an impromptu wedding reception at Pemberton’s. Jesse grapples with his decisions and confides in Ellen about Meredith.

In 2050, Future Sophie's Son calls his mother via video to hear the rest of her story about how she met the Father. Future Sophie recalls his first gallery show.
In a flashback, Sophie met Ian who told her he’s back in New York now and wanted to surprise her at her first gallery show. He asks if she’s seeing anyone and she says no- then agreeing to go out with him for a drink. Valentina intercepts to ask Sophie about Jesse- but Sophie insists she can’t let Ian get away.
Hannah and Sid want to have a party at the bar to celebrate their elopement. Valentina and Charlie tell everyone they broke up. Jesse arrives and is bothered when he sees Sophie and Ian together. However, he and Sophie both insist they don’t have feelings for each other and are just friends. Everyone heads to the bar to celebrate Sid and Hannah.
Ellen asks Jesse what happened between him and Sophie in the end. He explained what happened- how he said "I love You" to Sophie in his sleep and then she told him to go on tour with Meredith. He ended up kissing Meredith later on. Ellen is upset when she realizes Jesse is leaving to go on tour, and leaving her behind.
Charlie and Valentina try to find photos of Hannah and Sid, commending themselves for being mature as friends. But one thing leads to another and they start kissing.
A drunk Drew shows up, sad over Sophie and his father who is in trouble. Drew and Jesse both walk towards Sophie, who is with Ian, but she decides to instead call for Hannah and Sid to have their first dance to prevent any awkward situation from happening. There is a technical difficulty with the speaker so Sophie sings their song instead, but messes up. Sid makes the drunk singing stop.
Jesse and Drew confront Sophie. Sophie admits she saw Jesse kiss Meredith. Drew asks if she started seeing Jesse 24 hours after they broke up and she admits that yes she did. She leaves to get some air. She talks to Ian who knows she has had a rough time but that he still wants to have a chance with her. Sophie says she still needs to work some things out. Ian understands and tells her maybe someday.
Charlie and Valentina put on a photo slideshow for Sid and Hannah but their sex tape accidentally comes on. Jesse says sorry to Sophie who admits she’s sorry too.
In a flash forward, a young Sophie is driving and talking to her mom on the phone. Her car hits another and the driver steps out- it’s Barney Stinson.

- Sophie sings "When a Man Loves a Woman" by Percy Sledge. In the parent show, Barney sang the song to Nora in The Stinson Missile Crisis.
- Barney's license plate is "LGNDRY", which is a reference to his catchphrase.
Future References (Contains Spoilers)[]
- Future Sophie states that her rock bottom would be later in 2022 when she rear ends Barney's car while attempting to call Lori, stating she thinks she's dating her father.

- Unlike the parent show where each episode took place in the year the episode aired (apart from the ninth season), this episode does not take place in 2023, but rather continues to storyline in 2022.
- By the end of the year, Sophie runs into Robin Scherbatsky ex-husband Barney Stinson.
- Sophie's son makes a reference to her story feeling like "she's been speaking for a year". This is a reference to the one year span between the first and second seasons.
- Like Cobie Smulders in "Timing is Everything", Neil Patrick Harris receives "Special Appearance By" billing, as opposed to "Special Guest Star".
