Ellen Gilbert is a main character in the Hulu series, How I Met Your Father. She is portrayed by Tien Tran.
Background[]
Ellen is Jesse Walker's adopted sister who just moved to New York from the small farming town of Little Crescent, Iowa after separating from her wife with whom she owns a produce farm.
Ellen was adopted from Vietnam as a baby. When she was six, her and Jesses parents divorced following their mother's affair with a man named Chuck. Ellen went to live in Iowa with their mother and her boyfriend, while Jesse stayed with their father in Cincinnati, Ohio. Ellen’s more comfortable on an organic butter lettuce field than in a Brooklyn dive bar.
Ellen tries dating in the city. She starts seeing a therapist but her friends keep asking her to ask her therapist for advice for them. Her therapist tells her she can't be her client anymore but Ellen's friends get involved and convince her to take Ellen back as a client.
Sophie asks Ellen to send in a recommendation for her at her place of work. Sophie gets the job, but is later shocked to find out that Ellen never sent the recommendation. Ellen told Sophie she forgot, but later admits that she did not send it because she was unsure if Sophie could last in a full-time job. They get in a huge argument over it but end up doing a good job at work and both keep their jobs.
Ellen is dating Rachel. They live together. However, one day, Sid and Ellen follow Rachel and learn she is looking for a new apartment. Confused, Ellen finds out that Rachel wants space from Ellen. Eventually, Rachels tells Ellen herself that she needs space and they break up.
