Recap[]
Older Sophie says that this story is “about the journey, not the destination.”
Sophie can't get over Ian, so Valentina interrupts her pity party to make her watch old Jane Fonda videos. Valentina tries to talk Sophie into going out that night, but Sophie just wants to stay in and feel sorry for herself. Valentina isn’t going to let her, and that means they’re going to FOMO the night away.
Valentina has other motives- she knows she’s going to need a night out in town after she breaks up with Charlie because he is smothering her. A conversation with Sophie reveals that Valentina doesn’t really want to break up with Charlie, she’s just annoyed because he’s always around. Sophie points out this is a result of Valentina being the only person he knows and that Charlie probably needs friends. Valentina and Sophie agree that they can both be better. Sophie can try to move on, Valentina can help Charlie. They also agree that Valentina makes awful coffee.
Sophie’s idea of how to get friends for Charlie is to invite Jesse and Sid to go out with them. Jesse gets the text as he, Sid and Ellen are helping spruce up Sid’s bar. Jesse is ready to say no because he hates clubs, but Sid and Ellen talk him into it.
Later that night, Sophie, Valentina and Charlie meet up with Jesse, Sid, and Ellen. Jesse is a little in his head, so he acts awkward around Sophie. But she doesn’t have time to notice, as Ian sends her a text. It’s an innocuous message, but Valentina points out how the fact that she sends it feels like she’s trying to have his cake and eat it too.
When they reach the door, Valentina points out this is a “setup.” She means a friend one, but Jesse thinks it’s all about him and Sophie. Jesse manages the courage to invite Sophie into the “candle room” for a drink. She accepts but then she spirals thanks to an inside joke with Ian, and leaves Jesse sitting in the room alone with two drinks. When Valentina confronts her about texting Ian, Sophie basically says being mature is overrated. They’re young. They can make mistakes for a few more years.
Sophie’s mistake leads her to her being kicked out of FOMO. Later, the group reconvenes and Valentina confirms to Jesse this was never a setup for him and Sophie, just a way to get them to become friends with Charlie. Sid and Jesse leave, and so does Charlie, after Valentina explains that she feels smothered and suggests they go their separate ways. He makes a good point before he goes, though, telling Valentina that she should have just told him she needed space, and if this is how she deals with every little issue, then it’s better they separate.
Outside, Sophie is sitting on the sidewalk, singing her comfort song. Valentina arrives and sings it with her. But the good news is, the friends setup worked, as Charlie is indeed hanging out with Jesse and Sid when Valentina and Sophie arrive at Pemberton's.
Valentina apologizes to Charlie, but he says that things are not going to work out as they are. He is still moving out. But he’d like to take her out on their first date. Valentina agrees and they go on to have sex in the storage closet. Ellen then arrives, proclaiming the night the best of her life yet it's revealed she didn't succeed in seducing a single girl in FOMO yet this doesn't convince her to give up.
Sophie apologizes to Jesse for the “setup” mix-up, and for standing him up as he’s fighting a jukebox. She tells him she’s a mess, and that she doesn’t one to be one of those people who make him doubt how amazing he is. Because she can see it. Jesse responds that he’s a mess too, and Sophie suggest they can be friends who are both a mess.
Valentina and Charlie return, Sid gets very happy that Charlie is now apparently a regular at his bar. Sophie decides not to send the message to Ian. She’s right where she needs to be, and she has absolutely no FOMO.
