Five words refers to, as Future Ted explains, the five words every person would say and would come to regret it. The gang has a few five words that they have said throughout the series.
The Five Words[]
- "We should buy a place." - Marshall telling Lily they should buy a new house. [1]
- "I should talk to her." - Ted saying he should talk to Robin about leaving the wedding instead of Stella. [2]
- "We should buy a bar." - Ted Mosby, Barney[3] and Marshall[4].
- "I can trust you guys." - Carl when he gave the bar keys to Ted and Barney.
- "We should start a band." - Ted and Barney in the same episode.
- "I can jump that far." - Marshall trying to jump to the other building. [5]
- "I must have Robin back." - Barney after meeting Don.[6]
- "Now I want her back." - Ted in the same episode.
- "I'm gonna win her back." - Ted going to get back together with Jeanette. [7]
- "I can walk that far". - Marshall on his way to the Farhampton Inn which is 5 miles away from his bus that broke down. [8]
