Future Sophie's Son is the listener of How I Met Your Father who is portrayed by an unknown actor. He is Sophie Tompkins's son of 2050, who is forced to listen to an overly long version of his parents' relationship from his mother.

Storyline

The year is 2050 and Sophie uses her smart home system to call her son using her voice. She wants to tell him the story of how she met his father. Although he thinks he already knows, Sophie thinks it is time he hears the unabridged version. Sophie begins by saying their love story started with a Tinder date like many love stories from 2022 did. As we jump back in time, young Sophie rushes across the street because she is late for her Tinder date.

For two seasons, this guy listened to Sophie's story, who was periodically distracted to pour herself a drink or dance with a toy teddy bear. Despite frequent complaints on his part, it seems that some aspects of his mother's past seem interesting to him, although he suspects that she occasionally embellishes reality.

Known Facts

• He is a student at an unknown college.
• His mother pays for his education and periodically jokingly blackmails him with it.
• Most likely, he is close to his parents because he knows suspiciously much about her past affair with Jesse and Sophie also periodically sends her son to ask his father about some aspects of their past.
• For a long time he did not know how Sophie first met his grandfather.
• It seems that he has some influence on Valentina, since Sophie took him with her to dissuade her from changing her hair blonde.
• At some point before leaving for college, he ran away from his parents when they forbade him to go on Olivia Rodrigo's farewell tour.

Possibilities and Theories

• The reason why the writers decided to hide his face for the duration of the story is that the candidates for the Father have a different cultural background (Jesse, Charlie and Drew are white men, Sid is Indian man and Ian is Afro-American man). Most likely, the father's physical appearance is dominant and if the audience had seen Sophie's son from the very beginning, it would have spoilerfully excluded some candidates that Sophie has designated since the pilot.

Notes and Trivia

• He is the reboteed version of Penny and Luke Mosby.
  • There are some similarities between them:
    • Penny and Luke were nameless for most of the series. The name of Sophie's son is also still unknown.
    • Sophie's son is just as unhappy with being a listener to old tales, like Ted's kids.
    • Penny and Luke periodically questioned some of their father's exaggerations, just as Sophie's son does with his mother.
    • Sophie's son knows about some of her old friends and even calls Valentina as "aunt." Luke and Penny also called Robin, their father's old friend and love interest, as "aunt."
    • Ted's kids knew (or guessed themselves) about his feelings for Robin. Sophie's son also knows about her past affair with Jesse.
    • Sophie's son knows about the lost photo of Jesse, Ted's kids knew about the meaning of the wandering yellow umbrella.
  • However, there are differences:
    • Unlike in How I Met Your Mother, Sophie's son is unseen and speaking to his mother through a webcam. But Future Sophie is seen, unlike Future Ted.
    • Penny and Luke listened to their father's story together, while Sophie's son is her only listener.
    • Ted's kids lost their mother a six years before Ted's story began, while Sophie's son's father is alive at the time of her story.
