Recap[]

The episode begins with George Van Smoot, aka The Captain, in bed with a woman who is not his wife. Sophie (as a kid) doesn’t understand why The Captain is relevant.

In the present, Sophie strolls into her apartment the day after the kiss and she’s in a better mood that she’s been in a while. Valentina is immediately suspicious, in that way best friends have of seeing through you. Sophie tries to be subtle, but Valentina guesses what has her in such a good mood, and wants all the details.

Sophie reveals that she wanted to kiss Jesse. Valentina remarks she always wanted to be someone’s hot aunt, just as Sid tells Jesse Walker he always wanted to be someone’s hot uncle.

Sophie decides to break up with Drew. After, Sophie and Jesse are going to go on a date.

Charlie plans a day to watch soccer with his friends, something no one’s that excited about. Sophie and Jesse bail, because romantic entanglements, and Sid and Hannah are not into it. Ellen picks that time to bring half her wardrobe into the bar so her friends can help her pick the perfect interview outfit.

Sid, meanwhile, finally comes clean about Meredith to Jesse, which is when they listen to the song, which turns out to be about how Meredith regrets dumping Jesse.

Sophie stops by to break up with Drew, but he is with his parents, who instantly invite her to stay.

At Pemberton's, Sid and Valentina tell everyone about Jesse and Sophie. Hannah points out that Sophie cheated on Drew, which Sid defends as the right kind of cheating. Hannah is not amused.

While Jesse sits down to talk to Meredith, Sophie finds out Drew’s parents have some bad news for him, so she can’t also break up with him on top of that. Meddling friends make it all worse, as Valentina finds out from basically stealing Sid’s phone that Jesse went to see Meredith, so she tells Sophie – who still breaks up with Drew anyway.

Charlie’s whole deal with soccer turns out to be about him being homesick, so Valentina goes after him and decorates his entire apartment in British themes, while dressed as a Spice Girl and holding Love Actually-type signs. Charlie seems happy she’s making the effort, but his face as he hugs her says he’s keeping another secret.

Meanwhile, Sid and Hannah talk about how the reason she’s freaking out is that she’s getting a chance at a fellowship that could keep her in LA, and keep them long distance, for another year. There’s no good resolution to this, as Hannah and Sid just stare at each other, realizing how hard it’s gonna be.

Back with Meredith and Jesse, she confesses she misses Jesse. She needs a piano player for her tour and wants it to be him. They can figure things out on the road, she says. We don’t see his answer, but we do see Sophie walking into the restaurant they’d agreed to meet with. Her phone rings, but it’s not Jesse, it’s Naomi, who tells her she’s putting her picture in her New Voices exhibit.

Sophie sits down the wait for Jesse, and as she does, older Sophie decides she needs a snack. She’s been talking forever. As she walks to get her snack, though, we can see the picture of Jesse, the one from the New Voices exhibit, is displayed in a place of honor at her home.
