Pausing and Unpausing is Marshall and Lily's tendency to "pause" fights and continue them later. It was first seen in Come On and later in Bass Player Wanted and Unpause. These episodes, along with Something Borrowed and Swarley, are the most "Marshall and Lily" centred episodes.
Pause[]
In Come On, when Marshall hears about Lily wanting to go to San Francisco by cancelling the wedding for her painting career, she and Marshall immediately paused the fight and had "fun". Even when they unpaused, the fight started to go out of hand making them pause again. Eventually Lily left Marshall and the fight was never finished for many years, even though the two got back together in Swarley.
In Bass Player Wanted, when Marshall arrives to Farhampton, Lily and him immediately "pause" before their fight about their future begins.
Unpause[]
In Unpause, their fight about Marshall taking the job in New York is unpaused by Lily after she and Marshall have sex, which Marshall tried to make last long to delay the fight.
They also finally unpause their first fight about Lily going to San Francisco, as Marshall asks Lily if their marriage and son are only consolation prizes. Lily again leaves in the middle of the fight. In How Your Mother Met Me, she is seen in a cab. In Sunrise, Lily comes back putting the fight to an end.
