Season 3 of How I Met Your Mother aired from September 24, 2007 to May 19, 2008 on CBS and contained 20 episodes from Wait For It to Miracles.
Synopsis[]
Robin returns from a trip to Argentina with a hunky new boyfriend, and Ted must adjust to life as her ex and her friend. He rebounds and gets a butterfly tattoo on a drunken night out. Marshall and Lily move out on their own, falling in love with a place they can't afford. Marshall learns of Lily's bad credit rating due to her compulsive shopping. Despite this, they are able to finally secure their dream apartment, only to discover it was poorly constructed and is located near a sewer. Barney is slapped for the third time on Thanksgiving, which Marshall dubs "Slapsgiving." Ted explains how he met the gang.
Ted reveals to his children that a yellow umbrella was the reason he met their mother. He attends a St. Patrick's Day party with Barney and his future wife happened to attend too, though they did not meet that night. Ted meets Stella (Sarah Chalke), a dermatologist he sees to remove his embarrassing tattoo. Despite doctors not being allowed to date patients, Ted waits until his tattoo removal sessions are over and begins dating Stella. He accommodates her busy lifestyle, meets her young daughter and considers a real future with Stella could be on the cards. Robin reunites with her first boyfriend, Simon. He has grown up to be a very arrogant slob who continually puts Robin down, but Robin is smitten, reconnecting with her teenage feelings for him. He breaks her heart by dumping her for the same woman he dumped her for when they were teens. Simon also reveals to the gang that Robin had a second song released during her short-lived pop career. Barney looks everywhere for evidence of the song but can't find it. He notices a distraught Robin crying and comforts her. She invites him back to her place and reveals she has the music video on tape. They watch it several times then sleep together. The encounter is just a one night stand to Robin but Barney has trouble moving past it. Ted is extremely hurt when he finds out, though doesn't harbour anger toward Robin. Ted temporarily cuts Barney out of his life and Barney is devastated.
Ted is spooked when Stella invites him to a wedding six months from the present, as it implies they will still be together by then. Stella is hurt by Ted's sudden non-committal attitude and the two argue. Shortly after, Ted is involved in a car accident, but isn't injured. At the hospital, Lily calls Barney to inform him of the crash and he begins to run all the way from his office to the hospital. Stella arrives and is shocked to find Ted thought they had broken up during their previous argument, to which Stella actually does break up with him. Barney arrives at the hospital but is hit by a bus as he crosses the road, breaking nearly every bone in his body. Ted becomes emotional seeing Barney's injuries, knowing Barney was just trying to get to him, so the two make up. Lily and Marshall ask Barney what flashed before his eyes when he was hit and as they joke about the possibilities, he secretly looks at Robin as she laughs along, then smiles to himself. Ted leaves hospital and finds Stella at an arcade, with her daughter. Ted proposes to her, and the season ends before she answers.
