Synopsis[]
The first episode returns to Barney's wedding in the future. Barney is nervous, and wonders whether he has made the right choice about his tie (a metaphor for who he is marrying). Ted reminds Barney that his wedding cannot possibly be as terrible as Punchy's wedding, which Marshall ruined. In the present, we see that Marshall and Lily were trying to hide Lily's pregnancy, but found it difficult because of the number of cute babies at the wedding. Robin (with Lily's help) considers telling Barney that her feelings for him had remained, but Barney is all about Nora. Marshall and Lily tell the gang they are pregnant,. During Ted's best man speech, Marshall points out Lily is pregnant but Punchy's wife thinks he is pointing to her and wonders how Marshall knew of her secret pregnancy, which causes a fight between both families.
Marshall is about to be hired by environmental law firm Honeywell & Cootes, but finds a video of himself online streaking during college. The video doesn't bother his new boss, Garrison Cootes. Meanwhile, Nora agrees to another date with Barney, but he lies to her about breaking his neck for sympathy and she sees through it. He vows never to lie to her again, and is forced to tell her every single lie he has told women to sleep with them. Barney vows to stay every day at the 24 hour diner they met at until he gets a second date to show how serious he is. Nora returns 9 hours later, and is impressed by Barney's persistence. Ted is featured on the cover of New York Magazine, and uses it to try finding a date for the Architects' ball, but ends up taking Robin. At the ball, Ted sees Victoria for the first time since Season 1.
When at Shinjitsu, Ted tells the gang about his encounter with Victoria. Robin makes awkward comments, but Ted tries to make amends with Victoria by cleaning dishes at the bakery. The gang thinks this means they slept together, but Ted reveals she is engaged. Victoria was only single for a day after breaking up with Ted, immediately dating a man named Klaus, her now fiance. As Victoria is leaving, she tells Ted that Robin is still the reason he can't settle down and that hanging out with her and Barney is holding him back. Marshall and Lily make a bet with Barney that he cannot perform Shinjitsu. If he proves he can, he can touch Lily's breasts, but if he loses, he has to wear Marshall's ducky tie. He ends up losing this bet just before he can do the 'Shrimp in the Pocket' because Lily flashes him, causing him to lose his concentration.
Robin is forced to attend court mandated therapy after she assaulted a woman who fell for a scam that Barney forgot to stop running when he started dating Nora. She tells her therapist she was jealous of Barney's grand romantic gestures to Nora, so when Nora went to France to cover a story, she planned to use those three days to get Barney back. The plan failed when Nora came back early. Robin actually beat up the woman so that she would not ruin Barney's date with Nora. Ted admits to Marshall he feels like he is lagging behind his friends; he thought he would be married with kids by now, alongside Marshall and Lily.
Marshall finds out his boss has given up on saving the environment and thinks it is too late to save the planet. Marshall helps him realize it isn't. Robin starts dating her therapist Kevin, and the gang find it creepy.
Ted tries to go on a date with a girl without looking her up on the internet, but ends up looking her up when Barney sends him a link to her website, while on his date with her. Lily and Marshall decide not to find out the sex of their baby and ask Barney, Robin and Kevin to help them paint the baby's room, but they find out their baby is a boy.
Kevin helps the gang realize that their partners remind them of their parents, ruining Lily and Marshall's night. Barney is finally going to sleep with Nora, but a series of unfortunate events gets in the way. He then realizes that Nora, too, reminds him of his mom, but he does end up turning the night around. After ten years of searching, Ted finally finds The Slutty Pumpkin, but realizes that she is not as perfect as he hoped. Meanwhile Barney finds out that he is one-quarter Canadian.
The gang reminisce about Hurricane Irene and Barney gets out of wearing the Ducky Tie by giving Marshall three extra slaps. Kevin figures out Barney wants to ditch the tie because he is going to meet Nora's parents. He catches a cab home with Robin and she asks if he ever told the gang about a near kiss they almost had the day after Hurricane Irene. As they agree it would've been a disaster if they had, Barney and Robin suddenly kiss anyway, and end up sleeping together. Barney and Robin feel guilty about cheating and decide to come clean, with a promise to each other that they will try dating again once they have ended things with Nora and Kevin. Barney is surprised by Nora's parents arriving early and as he listens to Nora's dad explain the concept of soulmates, he can only picture Robin in his mind. He confesses to Nora and she breaks up with him. Robin attempts to confess to Kevin but he says he loves her and doesn't want to hear whatever she is about to say. As Barney waits nervously at the bar for Robin, she appears but Kevin follows shortly after. Barney is devastated as Robin shakes her head, rejecting his offer to get back together. He heads home and Ted, coming down from a high, heads home too. He secretly sees Barney in Robin's room, clearing out rose petals and blowing out candles he had set up.
Marshall and Lily decide to move to the suburbs and the gang wonders how they will keep in touch. For the first time, Future Robin narrates an episode, telling her and Barney's future kids about their dad. In the present, Robin tells Barney she might be pregnant. He assumes it must be Kevin's but she reveals she has not slept with him yet, so the father could only be Barney. Marshall gets some help with the Christmas lights by his neighbor Scott, that turns out scamming him and using his house for a party. Robin is confused at Barney's happiness about possibly being a dad. She is initially happy when she finds out she is not pregnant but is upset when her doctor also informs her she cannot have children at all. She does not tell the gang about this because she knows they will try to cheer her up in their own dysfunctional ways. Ted is desperate to know why she's upset and they briefly argue before Robin takes a walk around New York alone. 'Future' Robin reveals the future children are only imaginary. When she returns home, Ted has set up an elaborate Christmas light display to cheer her up.
On New Years Day, Marshall takes a trip to Minnesota to visit his father's gravestone. He tells his dad about the gang's New Years Eve events, which include Barney and Ted opening a bar, Puzzles, Marshall and Lily decorating their house in Long Island, and Robin temporarily taking Sandy's place in reporting the New Year's Eve/Day countdown.
Marshall and Lily officially move to the their house in the suburbs, where they find Lily's dad Mickey not wanting to move out. After putting up with him for two weeks, Marshall finally snaps and tells Mickey to move out. Meanwhile, Ted finds himself missing Marshall and Lily, while Barney embraces being the new leader of the group.
On a weekend trip to Vermont, Kevin proposes to Robin. She wants to say yes but is nervous about not being able to have kids. She reveals this to Kevin who initially says he doesn't care. When Robin explains that marrying her means he will never have children, he ends the relationship. As Robin talks to Ted about the break up, she tells him she cannot have kids. Ted says he doesn't care and confesses that he loves her. They briefly consider trying to date again but Robin eventually says she does not love Ted. Marshall tells Robin she has to move out of Ted's apartment as its the only way Ted can truly move on from her. She agrees.
Barney likes a woman named Quinn, and pursues her, even after finding out she is a stripper. Quinn takes advantage of him at first, but they eventually begin dating. Ted gives the apartment to Marshall and Lily which they gladly accept, being bored of their life in the suburbs. Barney and Quinn move in together, Robin is promoted to Sandy Rivers' co-host and Ted sublets Quinn's apartment.
Ted moves in to his new apartment and enjoys being alone, doing whatever he likes, but Barney still wants him to go out every night. Robin is put on the traffic helicopter for World Wide News and, while she is in the air, the pilot suffers a stroke. In a moment where all of New York is watching live, she lands the helicopter successfully, and the pilot makes a full recovery. She becomes very famous overnight. Barney tells Ted that the only reason he needs to be out every night is because he needs to take his mind off of Quinn working at the strip club.
Lily goes into labour while Marshall is partying with Barney in Atlantic City. Ted and Robin mend their friendship while helping Lily get to the hospital. When Ted laments to her about still being single, Robin suggests he call Victoria. When Victoria meets Ted, she is wearing a wedding dress; she is to get married that day. She tells Ted she was never able to stop thinking about him. She suggests they drive into the sunset together, but Ted says he is going to get her back to her wedding, as being left at the altar nearly killed him. However, Ted changes his mind at the last minute, and drives away with her. Marshall arrives back to New York just in time for the birth of his son, who he and Lily name Marvin Wait-for-it Eriksen, after Marshall's late father.
Barney regrets leaving for Atlantic City because he and Quinn had a fight. He returns home to find his apartment all girly and pink, but Barney doesn't care as long as he still has Quinn, and they plan a romantic getaway to Hawaii. In Barney's suitcase is a box he refuses to open, as he wants to use it for a magic trick. Barney and Quinn get held up by security. As a security guard questions Quinn, he asks her what her occupation is - to which she says she is unemployed. She says she wanted to surprise Barney when they were on their vacation, saying she quit stripping just for him. Afterward, Quinn is told she can leave but Barney must stay, but Barney tells her to wait and that he will finally reveal the magic trick. After an elaborate magic ploy, it is revealed that in the box was an engagement ring, which he uses to propose to Quinn and she accepts. They head to the apartment to inform the gang and Robin has a tender moment with Barney, saying she's happy for him.
In the last scene of the season, Robin is revealed to be the bride at Barney's wedding.
