Barney shows the Threeway Belt to Ted.
The Threeway Belt is the belt awarded to Ted or Barney whenever one of them manages to be a part of a threeway. The rules of the belt stipulate that the aggregate age of the three participants must not exceed 83 years and the aggregate weight must not exceed 400 pounds.
It was first revealed in Third Wheel; Ted reveals that he and Barney have a running joke that the first one between them to be in a three will win the championship belt. Marshall thinks he means a metaphorical belt, but it's shown that Barney went out and actually got the WWF "Winged Eagle" championship title belt for the occasion. The belt is mentioned many times throughout the series, and in the Barney's Blog entry From The Files Of Li'l Barney.
In that episode Ted enters the bedroom where Trudy and Rachel are, but later he doesn't reveal if he had won the belt.
Later, in Zoo or False Barney is seen on screen with the belt on, after telling the story of how he hooked up with two girls he met in different nights in the bar. However, Ted and Marshall think he's lying and that actually both women splashed their vodka tonic on his head.
In Shelter Island, Barney is in his room with another woman when Stella's sister Nora arrives. It is unknown if Barney claimed the belt for that or not.
In Romeward Bound, Barney shouts "The belt is mine!" when he wrongfully believes that Liddy was a prostitute hired by Robin.
Notes and Trivia[]
- Assuming a minimum age of 18 years, and two of the three participants being at that age, the belt is no longer obtainable if the third party is older than 47.
- Even had Ted slept with both women in Third Wheel, whether he would have qualified for the belt is unclear. Assuming that he weighs 160 pounds, Trudy and Rachel together cannot weigh more than 240 pounds together, or an average of 120 pounds each. If Ted weighs 180 pounds, they cannot weigh more than 220 pounds together, or 110 pounds on average each.
- Ted does however state when on the phone to Barney that the aggregate weight is below the required 400 pounds.
- It is possible that Barney did not qualify for the belt as he would have been 33 at the time of Shelter Island. Meaning the combined ages of Nora and the front desk girl would need to be no more then 50 combined.
