Sophie gets romantic advice from someone who’s been through it all. Valentina and Charlie face a tough crossroads. Jesse makes a choice.
Recap[]
The episode begins in 2022 with The Captain and Becky, his wife, going over divorce proceedings. Becky doesn’t want property or to get back together - she only wants to hit him where it hurts - boats.
In 2050, Future Sophie's Son complains about her jumping around in the story. Future Sophie continues and explains that in 2022, Jesse showed up for their date. When asked why he was late by Sophie, Jesse explained everything but he told about his time with Meredith, but tells her he got closure. Then, Sophie tells her son that since they’d waited a long time to get to this moment, they were going to take things slow. They immediately end up in bed together.
In Jesse and Sid's apartment, Hannah and Sid are discussing her fellowship offer. Sid suggests that they become "bicoastal power couple".
At Ellen and Charlie's apartment, Charlie is staring at Valentina as she sleeps when Ellen walks in with a cat. She recounts her interview at Goliath Market, which did not go well. Then she went on OkCupid to find a date, but the woman showed up with her husband because Ellen’s settings were accidentally on couples only. After that, Ellen found a cat and decided she needed an emotional support animal.
Charlie seems to be freaking out because Valentina wants kids, when he absolutely doesn’t. He claimed children turned his mother into a horrible person, and he doesn’t want to become that. Ellen tries to comfort him by saying he and Valentina are a new couple and nowhere near ready to have kids, but then Valentina wakes up in time to cuddle the cat and scare Charlie even more.
Jesse and Sophie are happy cuddling in bed, until Jesse sleepily tells Sophie he loves her, which makes her want to run. Instead, she ends up kicking him out with the pretense she’s gotta get ready for the gallery showing in ten hours. Charlie can’t stand the Valentina and cat situation any longer, so he confesses he doesn’t want kids.
At Pemberton's, meanwhile, Hannah and Sid are just discovering that their two-wedding plan (one in the United States and the other in India) is expensive. The only comfort Hannah and Sid get is that they can get a discount on a horse because the wedding planner is dating someone who provides horses yet this doesn't stop Hannah and Sid from arguing about their relationship as it involves frequent flights that will make their wedding plans even more expensive. Not helping is the wedding planner claiming she and the horse provider broke up.
Sophie heads to Jesse’s to bring up the elephant in the room-his love confession. Jesse makes it clear that when he said no to Meredith, and to going on tour, it was because of Sophie. Sophie freaks out even more and suggests that maybe he should have gone with Meredith. Jesse asks her to leave. Sophie wants to stay, and she wants to run. Instead, she heads to the bar downstairs to clear her head. She runs into Robin Scherbatsky, but only recognizes her as “that girl from the news. Robin seems to be feeling nostalgic about the place and wants to hear all about Sophie’s love life. She very quickly diagnoses Sophie’s problem, she’s scared. Because, as Robin points out, Jesse did nothing wrong except say everything Sophie wanted, just faster than she expected.
At Ellen and Charlie’s apartment, Charlie and Valentina argue about kids with Ellen now realizing that the cat doesn't like, making her take it out of the apartment. Ellen then finds that the cat belongs to Rachel, whom she tricked into a relationship that ended for that reason. After Ellen gives Rachel back her cat, she's willing to give Ellen another chance.
When Sophie goes back to talk to Jesse, he’s standing on the doorway kissing Meredith. She then goes back to MacLaren's, and after telling Robin what happened, she tells her that “timing is everything,” before promising he’s gonna be okay. She also promises to meet future Sophie for a drink at the bar in twenty years to make sure.
Sophie heads to Naomi Reisberg's gallery, where she couldn't forget Jesse as her picture on display features him. But her friends are there to support her. Sophie finds that Sid and Hannah rushed their marriage by going to city hall to validate it and that Ellen was able to get into a proper relationship with Rachel but that she got the job at Goliath Market because her interviewer laughed at the "head of lettuce" joke she used during the interview. For Valentina, she reluctantly tells Sophie that she broke up with Charlie after she found Sophie without Jesse. Both Sophie and Valentina claim to hold off the rest of the discussion about their romantic failures for another time.
In 2050, Older Sophie explains what happened to The Captain and Becky. Despite her son's reluctance in hearing the story, Sophie claims its connected because one of the boats Becky wanted out of the divorce is a certain boat in Australia used for a scientific mission dedicated to the procreation of coral life that The Captain is bankrolling. This leads to Ian, who left New York City (and by extension Sophie), who was a part of that expedition, to return. He then appeared at Reisberg's gallery, allowing him and Sophie to reunite.
